Garmin Instinct 2X Review: The Ultimate Tactical Smartwatch

I have been on a quest for the perfect smartwatch for over a decade. I’ve owned a bunch of different devices over the years, starting all the way back with the original Apple Watch in 2015, bouncing around through various Fitbits, trying out other Garmin models, and everything in between. Despite all that testing, I never found a device that checked every single box for my lifestyle.

Until now. The Garmin Instinct 2X Solar – Tactical Edition comes incredibly close to perfection.

Ticking the Essential Boxes

For a daily-use, outdoor-friendly wearable, this watch delivers on the core features I actually care about:

  • Super Long Battery Life: This is the massive headline feature. While standard smartwatches demand to be plugged in every single night, I am easily getting well over two weeks of battery life, and some users in the community are even reporting up to a full month depending on settings.
  • Tough & Rugged: A lot of smartwatches look sleek on paper but are clearly not designed for real physical activity or rough environments. The Instinct 2X is built to U.S. military 810 standards for thermal, shock, and water resistance. It can take a beating.
  • The Fundamentals: It supports seamless iPhone syncing, tracks activities accurately, includes reliable GPS, handles move reminders to keep you active, and supports iPhone notifications (though, to be fair, the notification integration could be a bit better refined).
  • An Ecosystem of Apps: There are a ton of useful utility apps pre-loaded out of the box, and you can download even more through the Garmin ConnectIQ store.

What Makes It Distinctly Different

If you are used to the glossy, bright screens of an Apple Watch or a Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Instinct 2X will surprise you in a few major ways:

1. A Monochrome Screen: It uses a high-contrast, dual-window monochrome display instead of a full-color LCD or OLED screen. While it skips the vibrant graphics, it makes the watch incredibly easy to read in direct sunlight. To me, it doesn’t really impact usability at all, and it dramatically cuts down on battery drain.

2. Physical Buttons Only: There is no touch screen. Everything is navigated using five rugged side buttons. If you’ve ever tried to swipe a wet touchscreen in the rain or while wearing thick gloves, you’ll immediately appreciate why tactical and outdoor watches stick to tactile buttons.

3. A True Built-In Flashlight: Many watches have a “flashlight” feature that just turns the screen bright white. The Instinct 2X has an actual, integrated multi-LED flashlight built into the top casing. You can adjust the brightness settings to guide your way in the dark, or you can even switch it to a green LED mode to preserve your night vision or keep a low profile.

(Note: The screen features a Power Glass solar charging face. Indoor lighting doesn’t seem to have any impact on boosting the power, and I haven’t really been able to test its true outdoor solar capability yet, but the baseline battery life is already so massive it hardly matters.)

Leaning into the “Tactical” Title

As the name implies, Garmin packed this specific edition with specialized apps geared toward military personnel, first responders, and hardcore outdoorsmen:

  • Applied Ballistics: This features a built-in ballistic solver (with a $100 or $300 unlock fee via the AB Synapse app) to calculate precise elevation and windage bullet trajectories for long-range shooting. It’s not something I personally need, but it is an incredibly powerful tool for big game hunters or tactical professionals.
  • Tactical Activity: A specialized tracking profile that displays dual-format GPS coordinates (like MGRS and latitude/longitude simultaneously).
  • Jumpmaster: An app specifically programmed to calculate high-altitude release points for skydivers and paratroopers.
  • Stealth Mode: A quick toggle that keeps the watch running but completely cuts off all wireless communication and stops storing/sharing your GPS position.
  • Kill Switch: A security feature that allows you to instantly wipe the device of all user memory and restore it to factory settings with a hotkey shortcut.

The Verdict

All in all, I love this watch. Is it “elegant”? No, definitely not. If you are looking for a sleek piece of jewelry to wear with a tailored suit to a formal dinner, you will need to look elsewhere. But if you want a rugged, dependable, every-day, outdoorsy smartwatch that refuses to die, this is the ultimate tool for the job.
