Your home is your castle—but is it actually safe?
Data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reveals that roughly 35% to 40% of violent encounters happen in or around the home. That figure skyrockets to 77% when the offender is a family member or acquaintance.
When you compound that with the fact that police response times often average 10 minutes or more, it forces two tough questions:
- Are you carrying at home?
- Are you in Condition White (unaware) or Condition Yellow (relaxed awareness) on your own property?
If we’re being honest, most of us stay in Condition White and leave our tools in the safe when we’re indoors. We let our guard down because we feel secure. But the numbers prove that threats don’t stop at the front door.
Securing your home doesn’t just mean personal carry; it means layering your perimeter defense. Start with these four steps to harden your target:
- Illumination: Install motion sensors or automatic timers on all exterior lighting.
- Landscaping: Trim bushes and tree limbs to eliminate blind spots and hiding places.
- Securing Windows: Lock down low-level windows and remove climbing platforms.
- Surveillance: Deploy cameras and a responsive alarm system for early warning.
Stay safe, patriots.
