Yesterday, I posted about the reasons for having a legal defense program, and some of the key programs available.
We have gone through many programs over the years, switching as programs change focus, and we learn more about their behavior.
As of July 2026, my recommendation is a program backed by a law firm rather than an insurance company. I have two primary reasons for this recommendation:
- Because they are backed by insurance companies, and insurance is a highly regulated industry, there are a number of exclusions built into their terms and conditions. In the last few years, there have been multiple cases where members defended themselves and were left hanging by their self-defense legal program.
- They aren’t attorneys and they record everything. What this means is that when you call the hotline, what you say is discoverable in court.
So which one?
If you are in Texas, sign up for Armed Attorneys. Yes, they are the new kid on the block, but their firm is full of patriots fighting the good fight in court and in the Texas legislature. I met attorney Richard Hayes at the gun range, and he is just a nice guy and also an Aggie, which is a big plus in my book. Richard is a key player in the Texas branch of Guns Owners of America, leading efforts to improve gun rights in the Texas Legislature.
If you aren’t in Texas, Attorneys on Retainer is your best option.
